However, users that live in some of the northern states or Canada may not find the cable very manageable in the winter months. The unit is NEMA-3 rated, so it is safe to use outdoors. We like that it's thin and easy to work with in warm temperatures, but when it's exposed to prolonged cold temperatures, it becomes very stiff and unmanageable. One weak point we found in the Gen 3 wall connector is its cable. In another house (my friend was building) we had the electrician run 2 gauge to the garage for a 100A subpanel to really future proof for multiple Wall Connectors (if needed one day). The biggest difference between the quotes is wire size. Needed 8 gauge for a 40A circuit (32A EVSE) but over-spec’d the wire to 6 gauge to future proof it for possible Tesla Wall Connector in the future. Like Tesla's vehicles, the unit can accept over-the-air updates, so activating the features will happen automatically and remotely. I have received a few quotes to install my Tesla Wall Connector for my model 3. The Gen 3 wall connector has been available for nearly a year now, and it's anyone's guess when Tesla will actually make the promised features available for use. However, the smart-charging features on those units actually work, while Tesla has yet to enable the features promised by the Gen 3 wall connector, and that has to be taken into consideration. 42 amps times 125 is 52.5 amps which is under the rating of your wire. It is just plum silly that the Tesla electomagician youngster keeps supplying/pushing these NEMA 14-50 adapters which is a carryover from the days when we needed to charge at campgrounds on road trips before the supercharger network was built out. So if you tell it you have a smaller breaker like a 50 amp, it will limit your charging to something like 42amps. It then uses that size to decide on the max charging rate. BTW, the answer to your question in the OP is that 6ga wire is fine for a 60a circuit if it's individual wires in conduit, but if you use NM cable (Romex) then it requires 4ga.
